The GenCAM, GENeral Call Auction Mechanism, installation packages along with a readme.txt can be retrieved by anonymous ftp from hss.caltech.edu/pub/gencam or URL ftp://hss.caltech.edu/pub/gencam The manual is in Microsoft Word97 format and in self-extracting zipped format. If you do not have Word97, you can still view and print the manual by using a viewer which Microsoft offers for free download from www.microsoft.com. There are two versions: wd97vwr32.exe for 32-bit Windows and wdvw9716.exe for 16-bit Windows. You can also download these from the gencam directory under the viewer subdirectory. It's easy to install and to operate. Once installed, very little preparation is needed to run the program. If you found it useful, check back to the site often for updated version. ============================================================================= System requirement: General: Windows95 or WindowsNT, 1024*768 resolution display, 5MB disk space, Network: TCP/IP network stack(Winsock). Installation: Store the file CLNTSTUP.EXE and SRVRSTUP.EXE each in a separate temporary directory. Execute the programs. They will self extract the installation package for MKT CLIENT and MKT SERVER respectively. Once extracted, run the SETUP.EXE in each directory to install the programs. This will set up two program groups: MKTSRVR and MCLIENT for the Control program and the Subject program respectively. Operation: Run the MKRSRVR program on a machine. The IP address/Name of this machine is needed for the subject program, mclient, to operate. The Control program allows as many as 250 Subject connections, each on a seperate machine (Though, only up to 22 have been tested.) Running multiple copies of Subject program on a single machine require that each starts from a different directory because the program uses the data file exclusively. On the Login form in the Subject Program, enter an ID (digits only) and the IP address (or NAME if DNS is available) of the machine running the MKTSRVR program. The Port# is fixed at 2001 in current version. The Password field is not used. Click on the Continue button. Wait until all subject programs proceed to market window. From the MKTSRVR, enter/edit/delete(Ctrl-delete) to modify the market name for the number of markets needed. Click the CreateMarkets button right above the market list to create markets in Subject program. Set the length of round, in seconds, click the OPEN button to start a round. Market will CALL when the timer runs out or when the CLOSE button is pressed. STOPPING rule is when no one make any change in one round. But it can be stopped any time and a fresh period started. When Discriminative Rule is used, markets will open for only one round. Subcequent OPEN automatically starts a new Period. The subject program can enter orders in each market. Move the mouse cursor around and let it stop briefly at places to see some helpful hints on screen. General rules are: a subject can only be either a buyer or a seller in ALL markets, not both, in an experiment. Order quantities can't be changed, price can be improved, in succeeding rounds. Only one submission per market in the first Round. Round 2 and on accept multiple revisions. The DATA are recorded in PARADOX table format in the directory of the MKTSRVR program. The only way to convert the data into other form is trhough The COPY function in each of the History window. Once marked the Beginning and End of the block to be copied, click on the Copy button to copy the block to the Windows Clipboard. It can then be Paste into other application. Make sure the Begin mark is actually in front of the End mark in the window. The Contents of the history can be cleared from the menu item File/Clear Contents. The program does not preserve the history other than what's shown in the window. Therefore, make sure the records are copied to other location before clearing them.
